To strengthen the connection between the WA Department of Education and student perspectives, the WA Student Council was established in September 2022. Each year, the council brings together public school students from Years 10 and 11, representing communities right across Western Australia.
These students are nominated for their leadership, academic and cultural achievements, and commitment to making a positive difference in their schools and regions. A new group of 16 outstanding students has now been selected to join the 2026 WA Student Council, and together with the returning members from 2025, they form a 27‑member council, chosen through a careful and competitive selection process.

The role of the council
The council represents student voices from across Western Australia, providing a direct line between young people and education decision‑makers. Members advise the Department of Education and the Minister for Education on policy and reform, represent the interests of their education regions, and speak on behalf of all public school students in Western Australia, while also serving as ambassadors for student leadership across the state.
Council activities
Throughout the year, council members meet with the Minister for Education and Department representatives, take part in regular online meetings, and connect with students and staff within their local schools. They also participate in leadership activities such as training sessions, events and a camp, and provide feedback on Department of Education initiatives that impact students statewide. Previously, the council’s contributions have helped inform significant initiatives, including the Quality Teaching Strategy.
This year’s 16 new members each represent one of the following regions: The Kimberley, Pilbara, Midwest, Goldfields, Wheatbelt, South West, North Metropolitan, and South Metropolitan areas.
