Student councillors at Kent Street Senior High School in Western Australia took charge of organizing meaningful NAIDOC Week activities, including art, sport, and hospitality.
During NAIDOC Week 2025 (6-13 July), the student councillors led face painting sessions and bracelet making workshops. These hands-on activities used art and storytelling to share Indigenous history with their peers in an engaging way.
This year’s NAIDOC theme was “The Next Generation: Strength, Vision and Legacy”, which these leaders centred their activities around.
The week began with the annual NAIDOC award assembly, recognizing outstanding contributions to Indigenous culture and community. Hospitality students also played a leadership role by preparing traditional foods including kangaroo stew and damper for lunch, giving the whole school community a taste of Indigenous cuisine.
The celebrations finished with a staff versus student football match on the school oval, which built teamwork and school spirit across the community.
Principal Kacey Single praised how the school community came together, saying NAIDOC Week gives them “a chance to come together to respect and honour the rich heritage” of First Nations peoples.
