NAIDOC week celebrated right

NAIDOC Week celebrates the history, culture and achievement of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and is celebrated all throughout Australia. The week creates a great opportunity for students to ask questions and learn about the culture of the Indigenous people. Applecross Senior High School took their celebrations to a whole new level by putting on multiple events and activities throughout the week so that everyone could participate in a different way.

They started off their celebration’s by putting on a Q&A panel with special guests to answer any questions that the students had about the Indigenous culture. Later that week the whole school attended a smoking ceremony, where its importance was explained to staff and students by a local Noongar woman and the year 12s even had the honour of participating in the ceremony.

Applecross also had a chalk mural where all students could release their artistic talent and contribute to the mural by drawing something based on the Aboriginal language. Not only was all this done but during classes students where learning about the indigenous history and language. What a way to celebrate NAIDOC week.
