Relay to Cure Cancer

Students from Coomera Anglican College are preparing for their ninth annual Relay for Life on 27- 28 October, an event that has seen the College raise more than $25,000 for the Cancer Council since 2010.

The event involves participants walking in relay teams throughout the night, having collected sponsorship donations in advance of them setting out on the challenging overnight walk.

Year 12 students, Chloe and Kelly said “The 2017 Relay for Life event was perhaps one of the most tiring yet worthwhile nights we have had. If there is one word to describe the experience, it would be rewarding. From sombre moments to the candlelight ceremony in honour of those lost, amazing moments of laughter to food, friends and the Zumba session, there were so many different aspects to the night.”

In describing the format of the event last year they said “The event began with walking the first lap united together to honour the survivors and carers. Following this, we jumped right in to the eventful night ahead of us, taking turns to walk the track and motivate one another. Each lap we collected beads to add to our string collection and whilst we weren’t walking, we spent our time entertaining ourselves and playing board games. It was certainly a fun and enjoyable way to build bonds and relationships with our peers for this worthwhile cause. Later in the night we visited other teams around the oval and took part in the Candlelight Ceremony to remember those who we’ve lost which was a bittersweet atmosphere. We kick-started Sunday morning with an energetic Zumba class to pump us up before heading home.”

Relay for Life will return to Coomera Anglican College on Saturday 27 October, 2018. Other schools are encouraged to host an event, or get involved in a Relay for Life organised in the local area.
